Used mostly brush on this one, trying to ween myself from the safe but sterile mechanical pen. After showing Dermot #2 to a few people I realized that they weren't getting the punchline. To hammer the point a little further, I re-added the rainbow that was originally there.

Dermot #2
Tried something new for this one: working big! God, what a revalation! I shall never work small again! I dunno if I'm just having a bad colour day, but everything I tried on this looked like ass. After fussing around for a good while, I decided it looked best B&W. I guess I'm still a noob at colouring comics. I may have another go at colouring this, and if I do I'll post up the results.

Dermot
This was somewhat of an experiment in "speed cartooning" for me - doing the whole thing on one sheet of paper, inking right on top of the rough, inking quickly and loosely with just the brush, not redoing anything, etc.I kinda like it - some of the panels turned out nicely and the whole thing has a unified look and a freshness to it that is sometimes lacking in the more meticulous stuff I do. But then there's something in me (masochism? some catholic variation on the protestant work ethic?) that wants to slave and suffer over everything.
I wonder whether this tendency to obsess and choke up and redo is retarding my growth - whether I might improve quicker with a looser, faster approach...I dunno, I'm torn here, folks. Gimme some feedback, talk about your own grapplings with this and similar issues. Let's get a lively debate going on here! Anal retentives v.s. anal expulsives!

Meat the gang
I’ve been working on these characters in one way or another for the past 5 years. This summer I roughed out a bunch of rude little strips about them which I hope to be able to ink in the next few months. Eventually I’d like to do something a little larger with them- maybe flash cartoons or longer comics- but that will require an actual writer of some sort. Anybody interested?

5 Narbos

My older sister used to call people "narbos" sometimes. Anybody else ever use that word? Anybody know what the hell it means?
I'm trying to be a little less conservative with colour lately. I purposely used "weird colours" on this one like purple and brown which I normally never touch. All habits must go!

Finally

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme as 3D shape poem. You're welcome. Count how many ways I spelled "Bel-Air" incorrectly.

Docs on the Bay

Stephenville launched a documentary film festival in November called Docs on the Bay. I was asked to produce a poster. I ended up making two- this one, and a more austere one. They loved the austere one and frigging hated this one. I was kinda bummed at the time, but looking at it now I realize that perhaps it was a bit too Flintstones for the event. It lives on as blog fodder.
